Rotunda

Project Info

Project Description

Rotunda was built in 306 AC and it was part of Galerius’ Palace. It is said that it was meant to be his Mausoleum or a Pantheon, like the one in Rome. This circular building with a dome has a diameter of 24 meters and the name comes exactly from this circular shape.

Theodosius the Great converted it into a church called St George and it was the city’s metropolitan church. During the Ottoman occupation, a minaret was added and the church became a cami. The minaret stands until our days and it is the only one in Thessaloniki.

Rotunda is decorated with amazing mosaics and you can see them, since it is a museum, with free entrance to the public.
